Palm TX Internet through Samsung T509 on Tmobile

Update: I found another webpage with a script says it gets EDGE speeds, so I decided to try it. The new Palm TX dialup is about the same, but does seem to get faster speeds for me in my initial test. After running tests through DSLreports.com, I have decided it doesn't seem to change my speeds. I mostly get ~70kbps when my phone signal is good.

Here is the original post to give a history of getting to that dialup script:

It took a while, and a fruitless call to Tmobile 3rd tier support, but I finally got it so that i have somewhat flakey access on my Palm TX to the internet over Tmobile GPRS using a Bluetooth connection with my Samsung SGH-T509 phone on Tmobile. That is a mouthful.

I called Tmobile support hoping they would help, but they don't support the Palm TX. It took an hour previously to get things working so I could do the same on my laptop, so it is probably just as well.

I had Googled for a solution, but didn't find that much out there. I had run across a old archived forum thread on Brighthand which I figured couldn't be still valid since it is from October 2002 for a user to connect to the internet through a T68i!

http://forum.brighthand.com/archive/index.php?t-30128.html

The key is to set up a Bluetooth connection to the phone using the Palm TX wizard and choose Tmobile. Then go into "Prefs", "Network", and look for "T-Mobile US GPRS" in the Service pulldown. For the connection I have it set to "LAN ", which I think is the default (I have tried so many things I am not sure). A that point I use the connection script mentioned in the Brighthand thread mentioned above to set up the connection in the "Details", "Script..." page of that network connection:

Send CR:
Send: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","INTERNET3.VOICESTREAM.COM"
Send CR:
Send: ATD*99#
Send CR:
End

Make sure you have the correct zeros and O's in that.

Much to my surprise, that still mostly works. I say mostly, because it hasn't really always worked, although for my first attempt, I left out one of the AT instruction lines. I am trying it with everything in there to see if that works, although I don't know what any of it actually means.

I will update this if anyone can tell me what those things mean, and if any of them can be left out of the connection script.

I have updated the script part to simply have the two lines as in the following:
 Send CR:
Send: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","INTERNET3.VOICESTREAM.COM"
Send CR:
Send: ATD*99#
Send CR:
End
This still seems to work, and may be faster at connecting.

New Samsung SGH-T509 Mobile Phone

After hanging on to my Treo 600 phone as the screen died and the phone continued to degrade, I have finally decided to de-converge. I purchased a Samsung T509 phone through a one year contract deal with T-Mobile.

The phone seems to work pretty well, and is "the slimmest phone" for some region of the earth. I has a very nice clear screen and is easy to use -- mostly due to the lack of configurable settings -- and I have been enjoying not having a bulky Treo in my pocket when I head out for the evening.

The move to the new phone is all part of a change from the all-in-one Treo to a phone separate from my PDA. The plan was to get the phone with Bluetooth and internet, and then get a Palm TX with Bluetooth and wifi.
